Englund passes measure to extend unemployment benefits
2009-04-22
JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. – The House of Representatives on Tuesday passed legislation sponsored by state Rep. Vicki Englund that would make temporary technical changes in the state’s unemployment law to allow Missourians to collect up to 13 additional weeks in federal unemployment benefits. Englund’s proposal would impose no additional costs on Missouri businesses or taxpayers.
“As the national economic crisis continues, more and more Missourians are out of work through no fault of their own,” Englund said. “With just a minor change in state law, we can provide over 15,000 hard-working Missourians with some extra financial relief to help their families in these difficult economic times.”
Englund’s measure would allow the extra federal benefits to be triggered if Missouri’s total unemployment rate has increased by 10 percent over the previous two periods. At least 14 states have adopted trigger laws that allow for extended federal unemployment benefits. Another 11 states, including Missouri, are eligible to do so based on their unemployment rate calculations.
Englund, D-St. Louis County, added her proposal as an amendment to House Bill 1075, which makes various changes in state unemployment laws. HB 1075 won first-round House approval. A second vote to send the bill to the Senate is expected to come this week.
