5. June 16, 2010: The County Tourism Department
We need to take Back our Government!
That effort needs to start at the local level.
Our local Government budget has a $10.4 Million Dollar shortfall and County Government seems not to know where to cut?
Yes, our local Government has cut jobs. But where have they cut? By and large they cut the jobs of the lower level employees to the point that in some departments there is one supervisor to every two workers. This is extremely top heavy management and must be realigned.
However this is not enough. There also has to be cost cutting across all County departments. The first in a series of examples I would like to share with you is the example of the County Tourism Department.
Example: The County Tourism Department
The funding for the tourism department comes from the local bed tax. However, the budget is consistently much higher than what the department realizes in return.
In 2008, the Tourism Department spent $409,592 and only took in $368,323.
In 2009, the Tourism Department spent $907,497 and only took in$332,389.
In 2010, the Tourism Department budgeted $765,868 and only took in year to date $143,930.
When you spend more than you are taking in, you will eventually go broke. Is this good fiscal management? In today's electronic world it is time to change the way we do business, there is no doubt we could promote our County more cost effectively through an internet marketing service.
