Experience, Accountability, and LeadershipIt Matters!

Experience – It Matters!

Imagine having a toothache that requires a tooth extraction.  Would you go to a dentist who has never pulled a tooth or would you go to one who has years of proven experience?

Hernando County is suffering from painful problems in many areas that require someone who has the experience to deal with these problems and can help to solve them.

When I worked as a Fire Chief for the Air Force during the war with Iraq, my operating budget was cut by 80% from one year to the next because the money was more urgently needed to support our troops.

I suddenly had to operate on a greatly reduced budget and cutting services to the base population was not an option.  Instead, I took a hard look at all operating cost and eliminated everything as long as it would not cause a work stoppage or jeopardize the safety of the population.  This meant for example, no new equipment was purchased unless absolutely necessary.

As your Commissioner, I will be able to draw from these experiences in cost trimming including taking a hard look at management positions, efficiency audits for departments, combining of tasks and exploring more cost efficient ways of performing work, and stop the spending for anything we can do without!

Accountability – It Matters!

When you put your money into a savings account at the bank, you expect to receive a periodic statement to see how it performs.  However, tax payers often do not demand this accountability from their government.

Unfortunately, governments that are not held accountable tend to grow bigger and become less responsible to the people they are supposed to serve.

So who watches how your tax money is being spent?  During my career, I was tasked with overseeing many multi-million dollar contracts to ensure the taxpayers money was used appropriately and no overspending occurred.

As your Commissioner, I will be sensitive to doing just that, making sure your tax money is not wasted.

Leadership – It Matters!

Whether coaching a Little League team, running a fire department, or conducting the business of the people in a government entity, different situations require different approaches and many situations may require the courage and strength to make difficult decisions.

Good judgment, common sense, high ethical standards, and a practical approach are the leadership qualities that will help me as your County Commissioner to further the interests and goals of the citizens of Hernando County.
