MLB: Tampa Bay 2, LA Angels 0
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., May 9 (UPI) -- Evan Longoria's two-run homer in the ninth Friday gave Tampa Bay a 2-0 victory over the Los Angeles Angels -- a team-record tying seventh straight home win.
James Shields shut down the Angels on just one hit, a single to center by Brandon Wood in the third. The only other Los Angeles base runner, a hit batsman to lead off the fourth, was erased on a double play.
Shields (4-2) struck out eight in his first start since allowing seven runs to Boston in 3 2/3 innings.
The Angels' Jon Garland threw eight shutout innings, allowing four hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Justin Speier, however, could record only one out in the ninth.
Speier (0-2) gave up a leadoff single to B.J. Upton, who moved to second on a ground out by Carlos Pena. Longoria then hit a 1-1 pitch out to left to give the Rays their second straight dramatic victory.
Tampa Bay went 13 innings Wednesday before a grand slam by Dioner Navarro highlighted an 8-3 win over Toronto.
The Rays last won seven in a row at home in June 2004.
